Modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Phronis partnered with MyNu Energy to design and deliver scalable Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions using repurposed electric vehicle batteries. This included development of a 1MW fixed system and progression into modular, trailer-mounted units, enabling flexible, plug-and-play deployment for commercial and mobile energy applications.

The Scope

The project required development of a commercially viable BESS solution using second-life electric vehicle batteries, introducing both technical and integration challenges. Repurposed batteries vary in condition and performance, requiring robust electrical and control system design to ensure safe, reliable operation across multiple configurations.

The system needed to support both fixed installations and mobile deployment, requiring a scalable architecture that could be adapted across different use cases while maintaining consistent performance. Integration with existing electrical infrastructure and the ability to manage real-time energy demand added further complexity.

Additional challenges included ensuring safe operation, monitoring and control across distributed battery systems, while balancing technical performance with cost effectiveness to support broader adoption. The design also needed to accommodate modular expansion without compromising system integrity.

Our Response

Phronis worked closely with MyNu Energy to deliver electrical engineering, control system design and construction of the initial 1MW BESS, establishing the foundation for a scalable system architecture.

Building on this, we supported the development of modular, trailer-mounted BESS units, enabling mobile deployment and flexible application across different sites. The system architecture was designed to be repeatable and scalable, allowing multiple units to be deployed independently or combined to meet varying energy demands.

Control systems were developed to manage battery performance, enable real-time energy capture and discharge, and maintain safe operation across both fixed and mobile configurations. Our involvement extended through to construction, ensuring alignment between design intent and practical delivery.

The Impact

The project delivered a scalable BESS solution, progressing from a 1MW fixed installation to modular, mobile trailer-based systems. This approach enables flexible deployment across a range of applications, from permanent installations to temporary or remote power requirements.

The modular design allows systems to be scaled up or down depending on demand, providing adaptability for commercial users. By utilising repurposed EV batteries, the solution extends asset life while supporting more efficient energy use.

The combined fixed and mobile capability demonstrates a practical and scalable approach to energy storage, supporting real-time energy management and enabling broader application of second-life battery technology across multiple use cases.
